"Well then it sounds as though your job is very important with all the stuff you have to do," The SandWing growled, circling around Rose like she wanted to trap the mostly-SkyWing. Like one would trap a camel, Rose's brain injected unhelpfully, as she twirled around in circles to watch the SandWing.
"It is very important," Rose agreed, putting stress on the word "very". "I work under a pigeon. Uh, I mean, I work under a dragon called Pigeon. Pigeon is...uh...important..." she trailed off slowly, trying to think of what Pigeon was. Pigeon was the bossy not-a-hybrid head of the outpost guards who was rumored to be a spy for the SkyWing Queen, but Rose decided not to believe that last part.
Pigeon is... "Fire," she said in a funny whispery voice. Suddenly, she couldn't remember what the word "pigeon" meant anymore. Her voice was speaking on it's own, and Rose couldn't do anything about it. "Pigeon has fire."
She suddenly stopped spinning, and shook her head so quickly her ears flapped. The SandWing was staring at her, and Rose could feel her SandWing eyes burning a hole in her scales. Her mouth opened on it's own and she blurted out the first thing that came to her mind. "Pigeon is not a camel!" she shrieked, hoping to distract the SandWing while she raked her frenzied brain, trying desperately to remember what she had said when her mind had shut down.
Fire?

Gila frowned when the dragon replied. "It is VERY important," Was this dragon aware of what sarcasm was? "I work under a pigeon. Uh, I mean, I work under a dragon called Pigeon. Pigeon is... uh... important..." Gila snorted. The strange dragon was probably wrong, although this "pigeon" was definitely more important than a hybrid. "Fire," Gila looked around. That hadn't sounded like this dragon. "Pigeon has fire." Gila hissed, annoyed that she'd been even slightly spooked by the dragon's words. Stupid stupid of COURSE pigeon has fire skywings have fire does this dragon have fire? The dragon shook her head vigorously. Gila stared at her, wondering what kind of self-respecting Skywing would hire a hybrid. Maybe this 'Pigeon' didn't know she was a hybrid? Gila opened her mouth, about to ask what this dragon called herself, when she suddenly yelled "Pigeon is not a camel!" Gila stared at the dragon. Did she think Gila was that dumb, that she would mistake a dragon for a camel? She glowered at the dragon. "Of course Pigeon is not a camel you work under him and camels are not able to think they're animals and even you are smarter than a camel" It was clear that Gila did not think very highly of this dragon's intelligence. The SandWing stared at Rose. "Of course Pigeon is not a camel you work under him and camels are not able to think they're animals and even you are smarter than a camel." By the way that the SandWing was glaring at her, Rose had a feeling that the SandWing thought she really was as dumb as a camel. Which, now that Rose thought about it, seems pretty accurate.
Rose's head snapped up as she realized what the SandWing said. "How do you know that camels aren't able to think they're animals?" she asked curiously. "Only camels know what camels think. Are you a camel?" Inquisitive blue eyes blinked at the SandWing. Was this strange dragon a camel? Maybe a cross between a camel and a dragon? That was probably why she murdered the poor camel, because she didn't want to be related to something with lumps on its back...
That's it, Rose realized. This dragon is a half camel who doesn't want to be half camel so she goes around murdering her camel cousins. It all makes sense!

The dragon looked up. "How do you know that camels aren't able to think they're animals? Only camels know what camels think. Are you a camel?" Gila drew herself up to her full height, which was quite tall given that she'd gotten quite good at balancing on her tail. "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME I am NOT a camel I am a DRAGON how DARE you even CONSIDER that" She roared, spitting out little bits of flame with every word. A burst of flame shot out and set a little scraggly bush on fire. A rabbit darted out of the bush, escaping the burning bush that once gave it shelter. Gila dropped to the ground so she could lash her tail angrily, and the tip of the venomous barb on the end of her tail nicked the rabbit's ear, but Gila didn't even notice. She hissed angrily. "How stupid are you if you think a dragon is a CAMEL you've gotten too much sun you should run back to the rainforest where cowards like you live Gila decided that this dragon would never be of any use to her, alive or dead. She advanced on the dragon, preparing to stab this annoying dragon with her tail. Word count: 208 atlas

The SandWing drew herself to her full height, looming over Rose menacingly. Her squeak of terror was drowned by the SandWing's furious roars. "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME I am NOT a camel I am a DRAGON how DARE you even CONSIDER that!" Rose stared, petrified, at the angry dragon in front of her, who was now lashing her tail and spitting out plumes of flame. "How stupid are you if you think a dragon is a CAMEL you've gotten too much sun you should run back to the rainforest where cowards like you live." Almost as soon as she finished her sentence, the SandWing began to advance on Rose, her tail hovering in the air a mere few centimeters from Rose's nose.
Cross-eyed from staring at the SandWing's venomous tail, Rose began to back away hastily, trying to move fast without taking her eyes off of the angry SandWing. Okay okay okay, her brain declared. Be calm be calm be calm.
BE CALM?! the other part of her brain screeched. YOU ARE ABOUT TO BE MURDERED BY A HALF-CAMEL! A HALF-CAMEL!
Calm!
Camel!
Calm!
Camel!
Rose was dumbfounded, listening to the endless bickering inside her head. "Calm...camel?" she said tentatively.
NO!
NO!
Oh dear.

The dragon tried to back away from Gila, clearly panicking. Gila dragged herself after the dragon, matching her pace. The odd skywing paused for just a moment, looking at Gila hopefully. "Calm... camel?" Gila bristled. "I... AM NOT... A CAMEL!" She plunged her tail down towards the dragon, but as she did, something caught her eye. Two dragons, flying as fast as they could away from the scorpion den. That wing pattern it's Agate he saw me he saw me he said not to kill any more dragons he'll come back he'll see She glanced at the dragon. There was a scratch on her forearm, but it seemed as though Gila had avoided doing too much damage. Glancing nervously at the sky, she tackled the dragon, pinning her wings. "Wait for Agate he'll come I saw him" she muttered under her breath. The SandWing visibly bristled. "I... AM NOT... A CAMEL!" She shrieked, looking angry and murderous and about to explode at the same time.
You are dead, Rose's head sang gleefully as the SandWing stabbed her tail at Rose. She felt a sear on her forearm before the SandWing abruptly bowled her over and pinned her to the ground. "Wait for Agate he'll come I saw him," Rose heard the SandWing mutter.
Why aren't you dead? Rose's brain whined. You're supposed to dieeeeeee.
Rose did not think she liked her brain much. It was dumb and wanted her to die, and what kind of brain wants their host to die? Her brain dragged her down, it does, she's a quite smart dragon without her brain.
"What's an agate?" Rose asked dumbly. She probably had better things to do than ask dumb questions, but she still did it. The hybrid blamed her brain. But there were some things her brain could do, and one of those things is hear wingbeats. And she did hear wingbeats. Do agates fly?

Agate swooped through the air, his larger-than-usual wings allowing him to fly with some speed even after such a long flight from the scorpion den to the mountains. He wondered why his sister had been attacking a Skywing. Probably for no reason, he thought. Gila probably just saw the Skywing and assumed she was a threat. He hoped he wouldn't be too late for the dragon. He was relying on the fact that Gila probably wouldn't be as motivated to kill a Skywing as, say, an Icewing. And he hoped he'd been successful in trying to convince her that killing dragons wasn't a very nice thing to do. He was pleased to see that he was already getting closer to where he'd seen his sister. He dipped lower, eyes scanning the ground. He frowned when he saw that Gila was sitting on top of an unmoving Skywing. "Gila! Did you hurt her badly?" Gila frowned at him, but she was clearly pleased to see him. "She called me a camel not a camel how DARE she deserved it." Agate, who was used to his sister's odd way of talking, nodded sympathetically. "That wasn't very nice of her," he said, shooting the Skywing a significant look, "But that doesn't mean you should try to kill her." Gila grinned at him, which was odd. "Didn't try to kill her knew you'd be coming see only a scratch!" He looked, and saw that the dragon's wound was, indeed, just a scratch. Still a deadly tail scratch, but not if Gila truly knew she was coming. He smiled at his sister, then turned to the Skywing. "I apologize for my sister's actions. Thankfully, I'm here, so the venom in your scratch won't spread to the rest of your body." As he said this, he pulled out a jar of cactus milk soaked bandages, and started wrapping them around her arm. Once he was sure that her wound was sufficiently covered, he took some dry bandages and covered up the soaked ones. "Keep this on your arm until it stops hurting. It might take a while, but the wound isn't serious, so you should be able to fly without any help. I would offer to escort you to wherever you live, but I have other business elsewhere." atlas word count: 382

A SandWing suddenly appeared out of nowhere. He looked weird for a SandWing, with swirly patterns on his much-too-large wings. As he came lower, Rose subtly scooted away, staring with wide eyes as he landed and turned to the murder SandWing. "Gila! Did you hurt her badly?"
The murdery Gila frowned at the swirly-wings SandWing. "She called me a camel not a camel how DARE she deserved it."
Swirly-Wings turned to Rose and gave her a glare. Rose backed away even more. If Swirly-Wings knew Murder-Gila, then Swirly-Wings was probably also murdery. "That wasn't very nice of her, but that doesn't mean you should try to kill her." Oh. So Swirly-Wings wasn't murdery. Maybe she won't be killed by Murder-Gila with Swirly-Wings here. Maybe. Chances are low, her brain whispered in her ear gleefully. Her brain was weird.
"Didn't try to kill her knew you'd be coming see only a scratch!" At Murder-Gila's words, Swirly-Wings peered at her arm, and Rose backed away slightly, until she realized that she had backed away so much that her back was hitting the rock she had been hiding under when she had first spotted Murder-Gila.
"I apologize for my sister's actions. Thankfully, I'm here, so the venom in your scratch won't spread to the rest of your body." He pulled out a jar with some weird stuff inside, and started to wrap it around her arm. It's probably poison, Rose's brain told her casually. Rose squeaked, but she was trapped with Swirly-Wings and Murder-Gila on one side and a huge rock on the other.
"Keep this on your arm until it stops hurting. It might take a while, but the wound isn't serious, so you should be able to fly without any help. I would offer to escort you to wherever you live, but I have other business elsewhere."
Rose realized her mouth was hanging open and snapped it shut quickly. She wanted to thank him for not murdering her, but instead what left her mouth was a very rude "who are you?" Swirly-Wings had said that Murder-Gila was his sister, but they didn't seem alike at all. Swirly-Wings wasn't very murdery. He also didn't seem like a camel. Rose was quickly becoming cross-eyed from looking at both Swirly-Wings and Murder-Gila at the same time. Who knows, Swirly-Wings might change his mind and try to murder her. Murder-Gila was definitely very likely to murder her at any second.

Agate smiled at the nervous Skywing. "Of course! I'm sorry for not introducing myself before. My name is Agate." He spread his wings as if to display the swirling pattern he was named for. "I'm a medic. I live in the scorpion den, but I often travel to attend to dragons in need." He realized he should probably introduce Gila as well. This," he said, gesturing at his sister, "is my sister Gila." He wondered how he could say "She was tortured in the war and lost her mind" without making Gila angry. She hated thinking about that. "We, ah, fought in the war together. She's actually the reason I decided to learn the art of healing," he glanced at his sister and saw her looking at him with a sad look on her face. When she saw him look at her, she gave a little jump and turned her glare on the Skywing. Agate smiled sadly. The sister he remembered was still in there, he knew it. He just had to keep trying, and eventually, he'd get her back. Agate blinked hard and looked at the sky, refusing to show any tears. He cleared his throat and looked at the Skywing. "What about you? What's your story?" Agate realized, too late, that this was a very personal question to ask. atlasword count: 221

Swirly-Wings grinned at Rose. Rose didn't think it was a normal smile. It looked like an evil, I want to murder you smile. "Of course! I'm sorry for not introducing myself before. My name is Agate." Swirly-Wings-Dragon-Named-Agate (Rose decided to call him Swirly for short) spread his swirly wings as if showing off the swirly patterns on his swirly wings. "I'm a medic. I live in the scorpion den, but I often travel to attend to dragons in need. This is my sister Gila." Swirly pointed at Murder-Gila. So they were related. Huh. Swirly wasn't as murdery as his sister Murder-Gila. He looked to be deep in thought for a moment, before he continued, "We, ah, fought in the war together. She's actually the reason I decided to learn the art of healing." Swirly and Murder-Gila looked weirdly at each other, probably contemplating whether to kill her or not. Suddenly Swirly cleared his throat, making Rose jump. "What about you? What's your story?"
"Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh," Rose trailed off awkwardly. Her mind suddenly blanked. Um. So I hatched from an egg. And grew up."
Rose mentally slapped herself (how many times did she do that in the past hour? Twenty?) for being so dumb. Swirly and Murder-Gila was probably going to kill her because she was boring and not very interesting and not worth keeping alive. "I was born on Pantala!" She screamed suddenly, hoping to keep herself alive for a bit longer. "But then I moved here, I don't know why! My life is awesome! Yes! Actually! Really! Not fake!"
She quieted and looked hopefully at Swirly and Murder-Gila. Was her story interesting enough for her to not be killed? Probably not, her brain deadpanned.

"Uhhhhh, um. So I hatched from an egg. And grew up." Agate tilted his head a bit, confused. That was a very... vague answer. She hadn't even given her name. Was it that she didn't want to talk about her background? He'd thought that was a possibility, but this dragon was very... odd. The dragon's eyes suddenly widened. "I was born on Pantla!" Agate frowned at this. He had been to many places, and he had never heard of any place called Pantala. Maybe it was a remote Skywing town? "But then I moved here, I don't know why! My life is awesome! Yes! Actually! Really! Not fake!" Agate was getting more and more confused. He hadn't questioned that her life was fake, so why had she said that as if that was a question that she was asked quite often. Agate looked at his sister. How badly did she scare this dragon for her to be acting this panicked? Agate smiled at the dragon, trying very hard to not scare her further. "How interesting!" he commented, as though he had understood any of what she'd said about her origins. Agate reached into his pouch, and removed a small vial of brightsting cactus milk. "Now, when you go home, be sure to keep careful watch your scratch. If it starts getting worse, put some of this on it," he said, handing her the vial. "It counteracts the venom. If you run out, it's quite easy to get more. It comes from a cactus, like that one," he gestured towards a brightsting cactus that was close enough to them that you could easily see what it looked like. "Just take something to cut the cactus open with so you don't get poked," he smiled. "And now I have to go. Gila, could you go back to the scorpion den and tell anyone who asks for me that I'm out treating a patient and don't know when I'll be back?" He doubted that she would actually be that helpful to anyone looking for him, but he didn't have much of a choice. Gila nodded at him, shot a look of pure hatred at the Skywing, and flew off towards the scorpion den. Agate smiled apologetically at the Skywing. "I'm sorry again for my sister, she's... been through a lot, and it's hard for her to trust anyone."Word count: 395 atlas

"How interesting!" Swirly commented, and Rose relaxed. Maybe Swirly wasn't going to kill her after all. He reached into a pouch and pulled out a vial that was suspiciously sharp, like a knife. "Now, when you go home, be sure to keep careful watch your scratch. If it starts getting worse, put some of this on it." Rose cautiously took the vial from Swirly. She wondered if it was full of poison.
Rose nodded, pretending to understand what Swirly had just said. "Uh-huh. Yep," she replied, trying to show that she was, indeed, an intellectual being who could understand simple Pyrrhian. "It counteracts the venom. If you run out, it's quite easy to get more. It comes from a cactus, like that one," Swirly continued, and paused to point at a rather ordinary looking cactus plant. Rose suspected that it could be dug up and used as a murder weapon. She eyed Murder-Gila. Murder-Gila seemed very much like the type to kill her with a cactus plant.
"Just take something to cut the cactus open with so you don't get poked. And now I have to go. Gila, could you go back to the scorpion den and tell anyone who asks for me that I'm out treating a patient and don't know when I'll be back?"
Swirly's smile was rather creepy. It was probably what Murder-Gila's smile would look like, if Murder-Gila did smile, at least. Rose skittered a little further away from the possibly-maybe-part-camel, calculating her flight route if Murder-Gila did happen to try to kill her with a cactus. Swirly didn't seem like the type to kill her, though. She should probably be nicer to Swirly, for her life's sake. Rose had the bad feeling that even if she was nice to Murder-Gila, Murder-Gila would still kill her, so she turned to Swirly and awkwardly said, "Uh, thanks, Swirly. I hope you have more patients to treat?"
She mentally slapped herself (again, her brain reminded her) and gave Swirly her best smile, trying to seem somewhat confident.

Agate frowned as the odd Skywing called him "swirly". Was that an insult? He wasn't sure. He quickly replaced his puzzled expression with a smile. "I do, in fact! That is the only reason I'm not accompanying you to make sure you arrive safely." He looked in the direction he'd come from, knowing that Minke needed his help far more than this Skywing. Well, maybe. She did seem very confused, and was very visibly shaken by her encounter with his sister. He hoped he'd been correct in judging her injury as being only external. Well, it was too late now. He'd told Minke to wait for him to return, so he couldn't just leave them to care for this Skywing. He smiled at her once more. "I'm sorry, but I should return to the dragon I was helping before you, to make sure they're all right." He vaulted into the sky, his mind full of worries about Minke and the Skywing and wishing he could help them both. He sighed. There was nothing he could do about that, though. After all, he couldn't be in two places at once. Word count: 189 atlas
