Firefly Dance 70 words __________________
The young dragonet wandered the village in silence. It seemed that no one was really around. The dead morning was filled with a quietness that Firefly Dance found peaceful as walked around aimlessly, not knowing what to do. A shadow caught his eye and Firefly approached it, huffing as he saw it was the sun playing tricks on him. He sat down, already defeated. This wasn't much fun, or productive.

Sparrow scanned the ground as they flew, searching for dragons. He was a scholar, and his studies were essential to the furthering of human knowledge. He knew that few would choose to study dragons, and even fewer would be willing to get as close as he did. And he was positive that none but him had ever been so successful in their studies. Sparrow had gone so far as to take a dragon's egg from its nest, and so he was able to observe its behavior from hatching. This had given him a bounty of information on dragon growth and maturity, but unfortunately it had imprinted on him, so it was useless to study it for dragon behavior. No, to get notes on that, he'd have to find wild dragons and observe them. This was easier to do when he had a dragon to ride. He could spend his time actually studying dragons instead of spending his time moving slowly around the continent. As they flew over the peninsula, he started to see giant ruins. Evidence of an ancient dragon civilization! he thought excitedly, scanning the ground even harder than before. Then, he saw it! A dragon that was a blue so dark it was almost black, covered in silver scales that reminded Sparrow of stars. Sparrow urged his dragon to land a ways away, so that the dragon wouldn't see him land, and slowly crept up on it. A black dragon! Those were one of the rarest ones! Sparrow had hardly any notes on them at all. He reached excitedly for his notebook. --- Apple crept up behind Sparrow as quietly as he could. It was hard to stalk silently without knocking things over, but Apple knew he could do it. As he got closer, Sparrow shot him a look, and Apple instantly froze, not even risking breathing. Apple was prepared to stay completely silent for as long as Sparrow needed. He knew that making sure the dragon didn't know they were there was "absolutely imperative for proper study". At least, that's what Sparrow said. His brother was so smart. Apple knew they weren't blood brothers, obviously, but they were family nonetheless. He knew that Sparrow felt the same. Why else would Sparrow have rescued his egg, and raised him? Word count: 380 lynxpaw

The dragon turned around as he scented something. Some one. Screw that. Two Some ones. "Who's there?" the dark navy blue dragon snarled, the pale yellow disspearing and appearing like stars as he walked in a tight circle, checking every direction. Then it his him hard. "Dragon, where are you? Bring you little, filthy scavenger out as well" he growled. Okay. So maybe he wasn't supposed to be mean, but Firefly Dance didn't really enjoy the company of other dragons. Especially ones who hid and watched him. Ew. What creeps. His deep violet eyes narrowed as he let out a low, deep and threatening growl, trying to send a warning to the other dragon near by. To hurry the hell up and show their faces. Word count: 123 Mantis Shrimp

And so the two began watching the dragon. Well, Sparrow was watching the dragon. Apple was watching Sparrow. He loved the happy expression that his brother got whenever he discovered something new, and the disappointment whenever the dragon he was watching flew away. Sparrow was so smart. In the five years that Apple had been with Sparrow, Sparrow had discovered more about dragons and dragon behavior than any other human. As Apple watched, Sparrow's face suddenly turned to a mix of fear and fascination. Apple followed his gaze to see that the dragon was staring straight at them. Apple watched in horror as the dragon snarled at them. What if it gets Sparrow? What if something happens to him? As Apple thought about what this dragon could do to his best friend, Apple felt a growl forming in his own throat. He held it in, trying not to further alert the dragon to their presence. --- Sparrow had just finished writing This black dragon seems to have a stronger sense of smell than the other dragons I've observed, as it smelled us as soon as we got close to it. Perhaps this is true of all of the black dragons, but I will need to observe more of this species to know. when he heard a rustling sound below him. He looked down to find that his dragon's tail was lashing as it glared at the dragon. That was... odd. Perhaps the mud dragons had an instinctive hatred for the black dragons? "Quiet!" Sparrow hissed at it. He didn't want the black dragon to find them. That would be terrible. Word count: 269 lynxpaw

Firefly Dance approached the two, heading even more closer. His aggression was soon replaced with friendliness as he saw that the human was studying him. One glance at the mud wing made the Nightwing growl again. It wasn't that Nightwings didn;t like mudwings, but the dark, navy blue dragon disliked them. Filthy creatures. That's what they were. Cousins to the pigs, mentally, but not through blood. "What are you doing here? You should take your dumb human away before I harm your little pet, you filthy pig" the assassin snarled, eyes violet narrowed, glistening with sheer disgust. Mantis ShrimpWord count: 98

Apple stilled as soon as Sparrow told him to be quiet, though the spines on his back still bristled. The dragon stepped closer, and Apple had to fight back another snarl. Closer and closer it paced, until it was staring directly at Sparrow. It seemed to relax a bit, but it took all of Apple's willpower not to leap out of his hiding spot to protect his brother. The dragon turned its gaze towards Apple and growled. It hates me, he realized. The dragon snarled something, never taking its gaze off of Apple. This dragon wanted him to do something, but Apple had no idea what he was supposed to do. But he could do one thing. He tilted his head a bit towards Sparrow. "Run. Go hide by the bend in the river we saw while we were flying. I'll meet you there once it's safe." Whatever happened here, he would make sure his brother was safe. Sparrow nodded wordlessly and slid down the tree trunk, heading towards the river as silently as he could. Once he was sure Sparrow was a safe distance away, Apple stepped into the clearing. He turned to face the dragon, feeling much less hostile now that his brother was out of danger. "Hello," Apple said quietly, even though he knew the dragon couldn't understand him. --- Sparrow picked his way through the forest, although his destination was not where his dragon had told him to go. He snorted at the thought. It thought it could tell him what to do? He admitted it was smart to leave his current hiding spot, since he'd been found, but there was no way he was going to miss out on the chance to see what the black dragon would do. He turned, making a wide loop towards a different spot that was further from the edge of the clearing as his previous hiding spot, and hopefully far enough away that the black dragon wouldn't smell him. He moved as quickly and silently as he could, but it was far too slow. He wished he could see what was happening! His dragon was useless when it came to observing dragons. It could never focus on details, and it was terrible at describing things. Which made sense, as it was a dragon. It was a miracle his dragon had learned to speak at all, much less form complex sentences. It was still a shock to hear that remarkably human voice coming out of a dragon. There! He quickly cleared his mind as the clearing became visible. He was looking at the black dragon's back now. Quickly he climbed up the tallest tree he could see, positioning himself to make the clearing as visible as he could. He readied his notebook and pencil to take notes. Word count: 466 lynxpaw
