Freezing Rain
A Chance Meeting in a Freezing Courtyard

Rain was glad that the snowstorm had hit today. It was quite boring, after all, living with nothing to do. Now, he'd have the excuse of staying inside verses sparring, as Mother had wanted. Mother had always wanted him to be a duelist, or one of those IceWings who could shrug off blows like they were nothing. He... was not- Rain had always been an elegant creature, composed of the lean muscles one may find a snow leopard to have, not one of those walls of raw strength that some other IceWing royals had.
Today, among the snow and ice falling from the sky, the IceWing moved. Elegantly curling around the pillars of the courtyard, spreading his wings and feeling the sharp bites of ice as it fell against his scales. It was a comfort, really- being alone in the snow as it fell, wind pushing it here and there as the IceWing prince bore witness to it.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" The voice snapped Freezing Rain out of his thoughts as he whirled around to see who had spoken to him. It was a fellow noble- Rain forgot their name, but knew them, or rather, of them. Beautiful, with perfect spikes and scales the color of a fresh snowfall- white, with the barest hints of a cold blue across them. Bright blue eyes, much like his own, and with the same lean muscles that Rain had.
Rain, for once in his life, took a second to think before speaking. "I suppose so. Though, if you're going to sneak up behind me, may I ask your name? So I know whose name to curse next time this happens, assuming it happens again." He actually stumbled over the words a little, oddly enough, though his tone was sharp as ever.
The other IceWing laughed- actually laughed- and raised an eye- ridge at the prince. "Sorbet. That's my name. Pleasure to meet you."
Rain nodded in acknowledgment. He'd seen the name on the Gift of Order before, and much like himself, it was in the First Circle. A noble like himself, and whose appearance he envied already, despite only knowing of him through rumors. Rumors that told of the dragon that Rain should aspire to look like, with perfect scales and better posture- at that thought, Rain corrected his, pushing his shoulders back a bit and raising his snout the smallest bit. A dragon his own age who was of lesser parents, and yet seemed to be the talk of the court among dragons of his age.
"Pleasure indeed. I've heard of you- you're all Chinook's talking about. My sister, that is." Rain hastily added the last bit, and scolded himself mentally. He should be so much more refined than this! "My name is Rain. Odd name for an IceWing, I know, but it's what Mother decided it would be."
"Rain," Sorbet mused. "I've heard of you- you're the Queen's... cousin?" When Rain nodded, Sorbet continued. "Impressive, meeting a true royal IceWing. One who... doesn't have their tail stuck so far up their ass that they can't be decent to others." Sorbet gave Rain a smile, and the prince snorted a bit, and then anxiously looked around, pushing himself into a refined position, like he was supposed to be. Not some childish, laughing, low- ranking guard who'd never see the palace again!
"Quite. But- um- I'm afraid I should go." Rain started, pushing whatever he was feeling down. He didn't like acting like a hatchling, giggling at everything and being an absolute buffoon.
"Oh." Sorbet replied, seeming a bit saddened. "Would you perhaps like to meet up tomorrow? I've noticed your guard posture is a bit off, and I could maybe help you get it right?" The end of the sentence was a bit hopeful, and Rain sighed, nodding.
"That's fine. I- that works. Thank you." He stumbled over his words a bit, and Sorbet grinned.
"Wonderful! I'll meet you here and we can move to my rooms? Feel it may be easier to speak if we're in private, you know?"
"Sounds lovely," Rain dipped his head in gratitude. "I'll see you then. Midday?"
"Perfect." And with that, Rain walked off, heading for his room. He'd figure out these strange emotions swirling in his chest there.
