"Did you know we had a king once?"
With wide eyes Quartz turned around to look at her friend, Polaris, who only smiled at her. "I thought that was just a ghost story?" She asked, frowning slightly as she tilted her head. "You know we're way too old for that kind of stuff, right?" Lifting her head, Quartz huffed at him, "We're almost seven, you know! And soon I'll be in the First Circle and ruling over you..!" Polaris rolled his eyes, flicking her with his wing, "Of course," He said, rolling his eyes, "But Dhruva told me he found it in a history book! I even checked for myself and he was right!"
"Mhm." Quartz narrowed her eyes, "I'm sure you're just messing with me, but fine. What was his name then? How did he become king?"
"Well, if you're going to be like that I won't tell you." Polaris huffed, flicking his wings back as he started to walk away. "Hey, wait! I'm actually curious now. Tell me!" She said, hurrying after him.
He stopped, turning his head slightly, "Oho? Are you sure? I thought ghost stories were for children, not First Circle adults."
"C'mon." She walked over to him, her wing brushing against his. "Just tell me already. Please?"
Polaris smiled faintly, and Quartz was almost sure his face turned a little more blue. "Alright, fine. But don't make fun of me. Or Dhruva!"
Quartz rolled her eyes, "Fineee, I'll try. I can't guarantee it though!"
"Well then, I won't tell you." Polaris hummed, and started walking again. "Okay, okay fine! I won't! Just tell me." She quickly said, jumping in front of him and spreading her wings out to stop him. "So tell me about him! What was his name, how did the other tribes react, what happened to the queen?"
Shaking his head slightly, Polaris laughed, "Okay calm down!" He sat down, curling his tail around his legs, "He was called Arrluk, and he became king by killing his entire family!" Quartz wrinkled her nose, "Oh so like that one Darkstalker?" She asked. He hummed tilting his head, "I don't think Darkstalker killed the entire royal family... Just his father. You'd have to ask Dhruva about that, though." Then he shook his head, "Anyway, the book said he was actually the Queen's oldest son and he was jealous that he was the only one of his siblings who wasn't allowed to have the throne. So he killed his sisters and tried to challenge her, but when she refused he killed the Queen as well!"
Quartz gasped, this was much more interesting than what their teachers taught. Which was probably why no one ever told her about it, or else school might actually be fun. "But then what? He just murders the Queen and everyone's okay with it? Like, no one said anything?" Polaris chuckled, happy that she was enjoying the story, instead of looking at all the little details and mistakes, like she usually did. "Oh yeah lots of people disagreed. But he cut out all their tongues! He first made sure that there was no one of the Royal family left, so he couldn't be challenged, and then whenever a noble disagreed with him he'd punish them! Usually just by cutting their tongues off, if they only said something bad, but he decapitated lots of dragons. Some weren't even Icewings, but visitors from other tribes!"
"But the other Queens? No one saw it as a threat."
Polaris hummed, closing his eyes as he tried to remember. Or only pretended. He probably knew it all, but Quartz knew that if he thought that if he showed her how much of a nerd he really was, she'd make fun of him. Not that she wouldn't...
"If I remember, the Seawings strongly disliked him. One of their princes was actually an Icewing-Seawing hybrid, so I guess they felt threatened. The Seawing Wueen eventually declared war on him. It was a really long war and lots of dragons died, but eventually the Seawings managed to invade the Ice Kingdom and capture him!"
"And what'd they do then?"
"Kill him of course! What else would you do if you were them? He killed tons of dragons and was directly threatening one of their royal family!" Quartz jumped up, baring her teeth in a rather feral looking grin, "I'd tear his throat out and eat him! And then, when I'm full, I'd leave his body near the south border so that seagulls from the Sand Kingdom will eat him!!"
"What...?" Polaris frowned, leaning back. "That's um..." Quartz took a step back, flicking her tail. "What's wrong?" She carefully asked, tilting her head slightly. "Oh, nothing!" He quickly got up, flicking the snow off his wings and tail, "I have to go but um, I'm glad you liked my story..!"
"Wait what.." Quartz frowned at Polaris, who had already turned around and was walking away at a rather fast pace. "Story..? Did you make that all up?!" She yelled, but he was already inside the palace. Normally Quartz might have chased after him and forced him to answer her question, but she didn't think it was worth it this time. It was a pretty good story, actually. Shaking her head, Quartz began to walk home, wondering if Dhruva helped him. Probably not, Dhruva's stories were always too big and fancy, but they didn't feel as real. She shook her head, smiling. Does it matter? At least it was nice to listen to. And she even got to spend some nice time with her friend, without other dragonets judging them. Mostly Polaris, for hanging out with someone like her, from a lower Circle family, but she often had to deal with them as well. I don't care what they think, Polaris is my friend and nothing they do or say can change that! Quartz thought, looking up at the darkening sky.
