Squid’s Rescue
The sickly grey egg lay ever still. Not once had it moved. It had been abandoned to the depths, having made its parents believe it held a dead dragonet within. Yet the father couldn’t leave it somewhere easily seen. Him and his mate had boasted so proudly about it. It would be such a shame if another were to find it. Especially seeing how discolored it was. So he swam deeper into the dark waters. Looking for a good spot to leave it. Him and his mate agreed to claim a shark had taken it. He had to hide it well. After swimming for over an hour he stopped. The egg was chilly and clearly a lost cause. He could just... smash it and be done with it. It was already dead after all. But what would that make him? Whale the egg smasher? Murder? No, no could not do that. He would just have to find an appropriate spot to hide it. He found that spot in some rocky outcropping near the south of the Bay of a Thousand Scales. Yes, here was good. No one would find here. Gently he set it down, resting a large claw on the shell. He held it there for a moment. This was his first egg in, decades, had it really been that long? Whale pulled his claw back, giving the lonely egg one last glance before speeding away. Unable to look at it a second longer.
The Seawing had completely missed his follower. Another Seawing, roughly his age and had a reputation for their nasty attitude. Seagull had been following Whale ever since he left the Deep Palace. She’d seen him skulking around for a while now. Both him and his mate were known egg thieves. They had just never gotten caught. So when he suddenly darted past her, clutching something suspiciously egg-like, she chased him. Her boss is going to be upset she left her pearls without warning. But pearl diving is not nearly as important as stopping an egg thief!
Seagull followed at a distance. She didn’t want to spook him, he might hurt the egg. They swam farther and farther out. Taking a roundabout route. He couldn’t seem to decide where he wanted to go. Seagull got more infuriated by the minute. Had he no idea how much danger he was putting an innocent dragonet in?! Dragging it through currents and cold waters alike?! Finally though, he stopped. Looking around she’d guess they were in the Bay of a Thousand Scales. The green Seawing glanced about, then set the egg down. Then he just, left. Completely abandoning the egg. Seagull’s gills flared angrily as she waited for his form to disappear. Once it did, she bolted in the direction of the egg. Bubbles exploded with life as she swam hastily. The egg was tucked in between some rocks. She carefully pulled it free and held it against her chest. It was so cold. And poorly cared for, she could see where it once was a bright purple-blue but had faded to grey. “Oh Whale is going to have hell to pay for this.” She looked down fondly at the egg. “But for now, I’ve got to get you back.”
Seagull held the small egg close and swam back towards the Deep Palace. She may not be the strongest dragon out there, but she could swim faster than a Skywing could fly. And she’d never had to swim her fastest before either. Yet now she had to if this egg was going to have even the smallest chance of survival. What had taken a hour long trip was cut down to only 35 minutes. She bouldered past a skittish Whale on the way. He saw her and his eyes went wide with fright. Seagull was gone before he could even flash an apology in aquatic. An apology wouldn’t have helped anyway. Once she got this egg to safety, she was going to murder that coward.
The blue Seawing barreled into the nursery, not the royal one mind you. The guards had tried to at least slow her down, but she was too fast. The warm water curled around her, hopefully warming the egg as well. “Hey! What are you doing?!” Seagull set the egg down in an empty nest. With a snarl she turned to the guards. Puffing out to her full size. “If any of you remove this egg, I’ll kill you. If you touch this egg, I’ll kill you. If you do anything to this egg, I’ll kill you.” The guards now recognized the dragon, Seagull. Known for her downright hellish temper, and for keeping her promises. The smaller guard, a light blue Seawing named Trout spoke first. “Alright. No one will touch the egg. But you’re going to have to tell us where you got it.” Seagull wrapped her tail protectively around the egg. “I got it from Whale. That bastard left it alone in the Bay of a Thousand Scales.” The guards looked nervously between themselves. “We’ll talk to Whale-“ Seagull them off. “No. I will talk to Whale. This egg belongs to me now, if that snake comes for it, I’ll kill him. And anyone who try’s to get for him. Understood?” The guards were definitely scared now, but nodded politely all the same. Trout swallowed, then spoke. “So you’re adopting it?”
“Yes. I’m adopting it.”
