[Uhh warning: This story will be kinda horror-ish (inspired by horror but idk if i can write it xD) and probably contain death, gore and body horror]
[This first part doesn't have any gore yet, but later parts will! I'll put specific warnings at the top of each part]
[Tw: Death (Mentioned and Bones)]
Never go into the forest.
It was something Eira's parents and teachers had told ver since ve was a hatchling. Everyone always joked and laughed about it, saying that it was just a story they made up to keep curious dragonets from running away. But despite all the jokes, no one actually dared to explore it. "Sure, the beast might be fake, but the forest itself is still creepy!" They'd say, trying to hide their fear. Eira never believed that. Ve could see that small glint of terror in their eyes, every time they spoke of the forest and the beast inside of it.
"Something lives in the woods, which was once a dragonet like you." Vis parents had said, "It hides in the deepest, darkest parts during the day, but when the sun sets it comes out, looking for naughty dragonets to eat up." Eira just rolled vis eyes. After years of hearing the same boring story, ve didn't even bother saying anything. Apparently adults didn't like it when "naughty dragonets" tried to correct them, or ask how a dragon could turn into a beast. And when ve turned vis back to them, they'd roll their eyes, secretly wishing that the beast would eat Eira next.
But it didn't matter how many times everyone would deny that the beast existed, no one could ignore the fact that every few months things, or even people would disappear. Sometimes it was prey, sometimes a pet, and sometimes another dragon. Eira still remembered vis classmates' sad faces, when one of their friends went missing. They were sad and missed him, of course, but everyone seemed to just accept it. No one would get angry and decide to hunt the beast down to get revenge. They all just said goodbye, and continued with their day.
Is there something wrong with them, or am I just the weird one? Eira asked verself that almost every day. Ve did get angry, but no one wanted to help ver, and ve didn't think it was worth it risking vis life for someone ve barely knew. But this month Eira's mother was the one who disappeared. I don't need their help anyway. Ve thought as ve snuck out of vis home, rushing to the forest. And as they stood there, in front of the place where the beast who took vis mother lived, Eira hesitated. Is it worth it? Ve shook vis head. Of course it was. Even if ve couldn't save vis mother, Eira would at least try to slay the beast. Growling, ve gripped the spear ve took more tightly, before stepping into the dark forest.
...It was dark. Dark and empty and silent. The snow crunching under vis talons felt deafingly loud, compared to the emptiness of the woods. Eira noticed they were becoming more nervous with each step, jumping at vis own shadow. Ve stood still, holding vis breath, but ve still heard nothing. Nothing moved. There weren't even any birds. The Icewing shook vis head. Of course it was empty, they all fled from the beast.
Or were eaten.
As they walked, Eira suddenly tripped over something, landing with vis face in the snow. Ve quickly got up, looking around for any beasts, before turning around. Tilting vis head, ve looked at the thing they tripped on, but when ve brushed the snow off ve let out a yelp. It echoed around, probably alerting the beast, but ve didn't care. Vis mind just went blank as ve stared at the dragon skull in front of ver. After what felt like hours, or maybe just a few seconds, ve managed to get verself to move again. Quickly turning around, Eira ran away as fast as ve could, completely forgetting about being quiet or careful.
Ve had no idea how far ve ran, but eventually ve stopped, vis legs aching too much to keep going. The sun was likely setting as well. The leaves and branches blocked out the sky, but the shadows seemed to get longer and darker. Letting out a shaky sigh, Eira stumbled towards a fallen tree and lied down against it, folding vis wings over verself. Did I really just spend the entire day running..? Ve closed vis eyes, shivering. At night the beast would probly wake up and find ver.
Unless it's still eating mom...
Eira shook vis head, digging vis talons in the snow. No! Mom is still alive and I'm going to rescue her. Ve told verself, trying not to think about the skull ve found, until ve eventually fell asleep, a light dusting of snow covering vis pale scales as ve lied against the fallen tree. Vis sleep was light, with few dreams, but the few ve did have were filled with shadowy creatures, stalking ver from a distance.
